As exam period approaches I am lead to remember various exam periods thoughtful my time as a student. Just like in China exam season in the UK coincides with the start of the summer, which is when everyone wants to be outside! This annual ritual seems to continue forever, I think for I did 8 back to back years of summer examinations.

I am very impressed by the students here in the international department. The attitude and the amount of work students did when I was at school was much worse. I myself was never the most dedicated of students... it was a constant battle for me to do homework, and the majority of homework I was given I never completed.Exams, however, are a game changer, my whole work ethic was always geared around exams. The amount of material which you can revise and remember in a few weeks is incredible. The most important strategy for exams is organisation. I was and still am a disorganised person, but exam periods are blocks of time isolated from real life. Where the amount of effort put in really pays rewards.

First you should know the total content of each exam. All of you here have access to textbooks of the courses, these textbooks are all written for your course, the content of these books is what you need to understand. Perhaps you need to make a list of topics and key points in each topic to fully understand what the content is.

Secondly you should find out what you already know, there is no point spending a lot of time on things which are already very familiar to you.

Thirdly revise and learn what remains.

Here in the international department we have lots of staff who are willing to help you if you ask them any questions, but the first stage before you can ask staff for help. Is to work out where your own problems lie, this requires you to be diligent about checking you understand all the key points for each subject.

Good luck to all our students in their first exam period in the international department! We don't envy the task you have ahead of you, but we are all here to support you and help you as you revise and get ready for this important time.
